Nov. 3, 2010:  Alice M. Pollin, co-founder of the Bronxville Beautification Committee (BBC), died Oct. 27 at the age of 92.  Her husband, Burton Pollin, died last year.  She is survived by a daughter, Diana C. Pollin of Marseilles, France, and a son, Myles C. Pollin of Manhattan; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Alice and her husband were the organizers and the driving force of the BBC.  They picked the name, established its purpose, and personally managed the BBC through its formative years.  They also initiated the new traffic circle with plantings and a fountain—a fountain that they personally picked and convinced the Planning Board to approve.

Alice was Professor Emerita of Spanish at New York University, where she taught at the New York and Madrid campuses.  She was a pioneer in the use of computers in Hispanic studies.  Her scholarship focused on the Spanish baroque and Lorca.  She also loved art, gardening, and music.

"When I was President of the Working Gardeners," said Judge George McKinnis, "we gave Alice and Burton Pollin an award at our annual dinner for their work with the BBC.  The Bronxville Rotary Club also honored Alice and Burton with the Rotary Community Service Award."  McKinnis added, "As Alice had such a long and distinguished life, as she lived well beyond what we can expect out of our lives, as she has been such a good and righteous woman, I shall not rage against her life's end, but you and I can and should be very thankful for her and her work with us."
