Park 143 Bistro Opens with New Elegance; Replaces Village Cup & Saucer PDF Print Email


Feb. 1, 2012:  Park 143 Bistro, located at 143 Parkway Road, has opened in Bronxville, serving small plates and handcrafted cocktails in a polished, smart interior at this elegant take on New American dining.

Wayne Chessler, who may be familiar to Westchester diners from previous roles as the general manager of Harry's of Hartsdale and Underhills Crossing Restaurant, is the owner of this new restaurant on Parkway Road.  Before assisting in the opening and running of those two establishments, he honed his industry skills as the general manager of a consortium of food service operations at Rockefeller Center, which included the landmark Assembly Steak House and multiple full-service restaurants.

Executive Chef Derek Townsend, who was most recently sous chef at Manhattan's 10 Downing Street Food & Wine, leads culinary operations.  An Arizona native, Townsend spent years in varied leadership and training roles at world-class resorts in Scottsdale, including the AAA-Five-Diamond-awarded Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North.

Commenting on his new restaurant, Chessler stated, "My philosophy here is to bring a unique, elegant, and casual restaurant to Bronxville."

Made-to-order savory crepes, like sweet shrimp in a pesto, mango cucumber salsa, or wild mushrooms in crème fraîche, lead off a menu where classic ingredients find fresh purpose.  A gourmand's take on comfort food, the truffle-oil-topped macaroni and cheese is a tribute to fontina and mascarpone cheese.  Fresh pastas, like cappellini with duck confit, as well as quail eggs, salads, steak, and seafood offerings, such as a scallop crudo with grapefruit and mint, round out a menu whose offerings can be complemented by made-to-share orders of pomme frites or tempura-fried pickles.

Chessler adds, "Chef Derek and I love to design new and innovative ways to present food and drink.  Creatively prepared with fresh ingredients and seasonal flavors, the small-plate menu will give our guests more freedom to enjoy a free-flowing and relaxed dining experience."

Open for lunch and weekend brunch, full course meals, like a white Irish cheddar grilled cheese with tomato bisque and an apple wood bacon-and-egg-topped short rib Angus burger with caramelized onions, are served alongside a selection of salads and wraps.

A domestic and international wine list has been chosen to complement the seasonal variety of small plates.  Original cocktails with ingredients ranging from chipotle syrup to fresh dill are a hallmark feature of the beverage menu, which also includes drafts ranging from the Belgian amber Palm to an organic India Pale Ale from the Napa Valley.

The complete renovation of the space occupied by Park 143 Bistro was headed by Manhattan-based commercial interior designer Michael Kramer of Michael Thomas Designs.  Commenting on the look of the 65-seat eatery, Kramer stated, "Layers of design and meaning, like a group of three round clocks set to symbolize the past, present, and future of the restaurant, foster a rich sense that the guest experience has been carefully considered.  Park 143 Bistro is a glamorous space with a transporting elegance and deliberate sense of differentness that echoes the overall philosophy that the restaurant should feel like a special place--a welcoming escape from the everyday."

In the bar area, pewter-studded high-top chairs in black quilted leather are illuminated by custom-made blown glass light fixtures with Edison-style light bulbs and lipstick-red lantern toppers.  Zebra-print banquettes with red-leather piping and oversize wings line the main dining room where silver-edged mirrors and shades of blue mix with rows of box-shade sconces.  Built-in bookshelves and recessed seating surround an elevated chef's table.

On choosing the Bronxville location for his first restaurant, Chessler, himself a longtime Westchester resident, stated, "I love the sense of camaraderie and community here and strongly believe these factors support a strong local economy."  A member of the Bronxville Chamber of Commerce, he added, "I look forward to supporting community events and becoming part of the very dynamic and involved group of local business owners who imbue Bronxville with so much of its signature charm."

Commenting on his goals for his new venture, Chessler stated, "The restaurant business is my passion; a passion realized through Park 143 Bistro.  I hope that our gracious staff, creative menu, and elegant atmosphere will combine to create a place where people will really enjoy themselves.
