Pet of the Week: Adoption Story of Sadie

alt

By Allison Roesser

Mar. 18, 2020: A fortuitous meeting happened at work last week. A lovely Bronxville couple came into Petchester for an examination of their cat, and I happened to be assisting the veterinarian with the check-up. It was a sweet kitty named Nabby, who was obviously very well loved and cared for.

The next day at work, I received a page from the receptionist saying there was a gentleman up front who would like to speak with me. When I walked into the waiting room, I was greeted once again by Nabby’s owner, the dashing and dapperly dressed, John Tackett.

He was holding a piece of paper in his hand and said to me, “are you the Allison that writes the Pet of the Week column for Myhometownbronxville?” When I told him I was, he handed me the paper, which was a copy of an old Pet of the Week feature.

He said that two years ago, he and his wife read my column about a cat named Sadie, and they just knew they wanted to adopt her. After reading the article, they immediately went to the Humane Society of Westchester and made the adoption of Sadie complete. Click here to read the original column.

Being history fans, Sadie was renamed Nabby after Abigail and John Adams, Daughter, Abigail, who went by the diminutive “Nabby.” “We just adore her, and she is our little joy,” her adoptive parents told me.

I was moved beyond words to hear this happy ending, and Mr. Tackett and I gave each other a big hug. I spent the rest of the day with a huge smile on my face.

I know there are millions of homeless dogs and cats in our country, and sometimes doing rescue work seems like a Herculean effort. But stories like this make it worth every minute and also helps me realize that sometimes it’s the little things we do in life that can make all the difference to those around us.
