Bronxville Rotary Club Launches Veterans Memorial Website

Nov. 11, 2015: At the November 2 Bronxville Rotary luncheon, Jane Staunton announced the official launch of the Bronxville Veterans Memorial website. The site is dedicated to Bronxville residents who have served or are currently serving in the United States Military.
A Bronxville resident and member of The Bronxville Historical Conservancy, Staunton co-founded the Bronxville Veterans Memorial with her neighbor Cindi Callahan. Together they gathered information and documentation for a mobile exhibit consisting of photographs and other artifacts affixed to cardboard panels.
After several years of wear and tear exhibiting these panels at The Bronxville Women's Club and The Bronxville School, they determined the material needed a more secure platform and sought to create a digital library and preserve the history in an electronic format.
With funding from The Bronxville Historical Conservancy, Jane established a website for veterans within the larger Conservancy website. Bronxvilleveterans.org contains a mosaic of old Bronxville photographs, followed by an honor roll of 1,577 veterans' names. The names include those who have lived or currently reside in the 10708 zip code area and serve or have served in the US military. The roster of names can be sorted by categories including war, women, branch of service, and individual name. Clicking on an individual name pulls up specific biographical information.
"The site continues to be a work in progress." remarked Staunton. "The amount of information we have for each person varies, and we hope visitors to the site will help us fill in the gaps and submit additional documented information."
Staunton demonstrated accessing the website, selecting names, and then clicking on Rotarian Mary Westmoreland's name to reveal a photograph of Westmoreland and her biographical details: Westmoreland, Mary L., Colonel, US Army US Coast Guard, ACTIVE, RESERVE, Persian Gulf War, MEDALS: Legion of Merit with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters; COLLEGE: Pace University.
"This is so important," said Rotarian and veteran George McKinnis. "We need to make sure all our veterans' contributions are recognized and remembered."
Jane Stauton's presentation is part of the Bronxville Rotary's November speaker series, Giving Thanks and Honor, in recognition of Veterans Day and Thanksgiving.
The Rotary meets each Monday at 12:15 pm at Fogarty's in Bronxville.

Founded in 1966, the Boulder Ledge Garden Club is rooted in a mission to inspire a deeper appreciation and love for gardening and flower arranging. The club is dedicated to fostering and promoting interest and knowledge in gardening.
The Club maintains Bronxville’s Bicentennial Park and other civic gardens. In 2019–2020 the club raised $18,000 to replace trees in the village, reflecting its active role in community beautification. It also holds garden therapy projects and educational garden trips for members.

Bronxville Giving Garden
The Bronxville Giving Garden is a community-centered garden that donates organic produce to Eastchester Community Action Partnership in Tuckahoe and Community Service Associates in Mount Vernon. The garden is also a gathering place where school children and volunteers can discover the joy of tending plants and growing food.

The Bronxville Green Committee is a volunteer organization that is part of the Village of Bronxville. It proposes and implements environmentally sustainable programs in our community.
