By Lynn Joyce, Chair, "The Jansen" Paddle Tennis Committee
Feb. 24, 2016: It was a perfect weekend for "The Jansen," as it has come to be known. This very successful mixed paddle tournament held on various paddle courts in Westchester benefits exclusively Jansen Hospice and Palliative Care.
Players not only enjoy the spirit of paddle but they also support the Jansen mission to provide dignity and comfort to hundreds of families in the community.
The two-day tournament began on Saturday, February 20, in the morning, with 28 teams and beautiful weather. There was terrific paddle competition at the Bronxville Village paddle courts, the Bronxville Field Club, Siwanoy Country Club, and the Fox Meadow Club in Scarsdale.
Saturday started with breakfast bites. Lunch was sponsored by Park Place Bagels. Cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and music with Sean Nolan on acoustical guitar were hosted by the Bronxville Field Club. The evening festivities were a great success and completed the successful paddle day with tremendous support and enthusiasm from all of the players who came from New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
Sunday, another perfect paddle day, culminated at the Bronxville Village Courts with the very exciting finals of the main draw, and the finals of the closely contested consolation round.
Main Draw Winners: Carrie Rabuse and her son Michael Montalbano, who played against Margo DeSantis and Rusty Wright.
Consolation Winners: Leslie Rainor and Kevin Lyons, who played against Margaret Souther and Patrick O'Callaghan
The dedicated committee was headed by Lynn Joyce, who worked arduously throughout the many months of preparation with her dedicated team of Ed Corballis, Mel Cralle, and Mary Iantuano.
Many thanks go to Marjorie Hodson with www.paddlepro.com for organizing and doing the draw. Jason Fairbrother, a paddle pro in the Philadelphia area, traveled from Philadelphia to oversee and man the successful event.
Lynn Joyce, also a Jansen board member, thanked her team and the Bronxville Field Club, especially Laurie, the manager. The club graciously contributed two paddle racquets for the raffle. Also to be thanked were Siwanoy's paddle pro, Mark Parsons, and Nelle Davis and John Walzer at Fox Meadow.
Also to be applauded are all the people in the community who came together, along with the enthusiastic paddle players, to make this annual event the success that it was and continues to be.
"The Jansen" benefits Jansen Hospice and Palliative Care, a community organization that was started in memory of Allan Jansen by his wife, Bissie, over 30 years ago.
Allan played paddle at the village courts and the Bronxville Field Club and lived in Bronxville.
