Bronxville Women’s Club Clubhouse Finally Gets a Name

May 11, 2016: Everyone knows the stately building at the corner of Tanglewylde and Midland in Bronxville as “The Bronxville Women’s Club.” However, that is the membership; the building, itself, has never had a name. After nearly ninety years, the membership finally decided to give the clubhouse a name. Henceforth, it will be called The Anna Lawrence Bisland 1928 House, the Home of The Bronxville Women’s Club.
Other women’s clubs in Westchester that own their own buildings use the names of former owners as the name of the house (an example is the building of the Scarsdale Women’s Club, known as The Drake House.) However, The Bronxville Women’s Club did not have a previous owner. The club built the building in 1928, therefore being the only residents of the building.
Anna Lawrence Bisland, the daughter of Sarah Lawrence, was one of the founders and the first president of The Bronxville Women’s Club (BWC), which was founded in 1925. By 1927, there were one thousand members of the BWC! They were renting meeting space in the former clubhouse of the country club in Lawrence Park West but quickly outgrew it. With each member donating $50 and a $50,000 mortgage, the club built the present building, with the club moving into it in April of 1928.
Mrs. Bisland donated the land on which the building now stands. The building is one of the few original public buildings still standing in Bronxville. It is on the Westchester and New York State list of historic sites and is on the National List of Historic Places.
The Bronxville Women’s Club is a 501(c)(3) organization, and donations toward the restoration of the building are tax-deductible. Membership is open to women and men in the greater Westchester County area.
Penrose Stout, the architect, designed each room to be multipurpose. The Loggia entrance is also an art gallery—the first art gallery in Bronxville. The Great Room on the lower level has perfect acoustics for concerts and theater. It is also used for receptions, parties, dances, lectures, dinners, and anything else for large attendance. There is a beautiful sunken patio adjacent to the Great Room, and there is plenty of parking adjacent to the building on both levels.

Organized in 1982, the Bronxville Beautification Council (BBC) is a not-for-profit organization administered by a volunteer Board of Directors. The mission of the BBC is to enhance and maintain the natural and man-made beauty of the village of Bronxville, with an emphasis on the downtown business district.

Boulder Ledge Garden Club
Founded in 1966, the Boulder Ledge Garden Club is rooted in a mission to inspire a deeper appreciation and love for gardening and flower arranging. The club is dedicated to fostering and promoting interest and knowledge in gardening.
The Club maintains Bronxville’s Bicentennial Park and other civic gardens. In 2019–2020 the club raised $18,000 to replace trees in the village, reflecting its active role in community beautification. It also holds garden therapy projects and educational garden trips for members.

Bronxville Giving Garden
The Bronxville Giving Garden is a community-centered garden that donates organic produce to Eastchester Community Action Partnership in Tuckahoe and Community Service Associates in Mount Vernon. The garden is also a gathering place where school children and volunteers can discover the joy of tending plants and growing food.

Bronxville Green Committee
The Bronxville Green Committee is a volunteer organization that is part of the Village of Bronxville. It proposes and implements environmentally sustainable programs in our community.

Bronxville Boy Scouts
The village of Bronxville has a long tradition of scouting. “The troops and packs of Bronxville have maintained the finest scouting organizations and have taught the boys of the Bronxville area to be leaders and outstanding members of the local, national and global communities.”
