Community Fund Awards Grants of $518,300; Announces Recipients of the Michael Frey Scholarships

Jun. 22, 2016: The Community Fund of Bronxville, Eastchester, Tuckahoe, Inc., at its annual meeting held on Tuesday, May 31, announced that during the 2016-17 fiscal year it will award $518,300 in grants to 21 social service agencies and community organizations for 24 programs serving the Bronxville 10708, Eastchester, and Tuckahoe communities.
“We are excited to be able to provide such significant funding to these important not-for-profit organizations serving the neediest in our Bronxville, Eastchester, and Tuckahoe [BET] communities,” commented Doug Meyer, FY 2016 president of The Community Fund. “We are grateful for the generosity of our donors and of our board members, staff, and volunteer evaluators who’ve worked so hard to ensure that these agencies are maximizing the impact of this generosity.”
Andrea Bates, evaluations co-chair, added, “Our evaluators, working within a fully vetted evaluation process, are committed to ensuring that the money we are so generously giving is kept within the Bronxville, Eastchester, and Tuckahoe communities and thoughtfully allocated to agencies and programs that best fulfill the proven needs of our residents.”
As part of the annual grant award process, The Community Fund also announced eight recipients of the Michael Frey Scholarship Award. This award provides scholarships to local graduating seniors in memory of Michael Frey, an Eastchester police officer who lost his life in the line of duty, and in appreciation of the dedicated emergency workers in Bronxville, Eastchester, and Tuckahoe.
The students are nominated by their guidance counselors for demonstrating a commitment to dedicated service and support of their fellow students and the community at large. This year’s recipients are Natalia Kaminski, Juliet Timmins, and John Recine from Bronxville High School, Samantha Stroud and Andrew Capriglione from Eastchester High School, and Nyla Gallashaw, Anne Szpak, and Jordan Walker from Tuckahoe High School.
Melinda Burge, executive director of The Community Fund, added, “We are pleased to continue our tradition of remembering Michael Frey with this scholarship that celebrates student leaders who embody the same spirit of generosity and commitment to public service as we do at The Community Fund.”

Organized in 1982, the Bronxville Beautification Council (BBC) is a not-for-profit organization administered by a volunteer Board of Directors. The mission of the BBC is to enhance and maintain the natural and man-made beauty of the village of Bronxville, with an emphasis on the downtown business district.

Boulder Ledge Garden Club
Founded in 1966, the Boulder Ledge Garden Club is rooted in a mission to inspire a deeper appreciation and love for gardening and flower arranging. The club is dedicated to fostering and promoting interest and knowledge in gardening.
The Club maintains Bronxville’s Bicentennial Park and other civic gardens. In 2019–2020 the club raised $18,000 to replace trees in the village, reflecting its active role in community beautification. It also holds garden therapy projects and educational garden trips for members.

Bronxville Giving Garden
The Bronxville Giving Garden is a community-centered garden that donates organic produce to Eastchester Community Action Partnership in Tuckahoe and Community Service Associates in Mount Vernon. The garden is also a gathering place where school children and volunteers can discover the joy of tending plants and growing food.

Bronxville Green Committee
The Bronxville Green Committee is a volunteer organization that is part of the Village of Bronxville. It proposes and implements environmentally sustainable programs in our community.

Bronxville Boy Scouts
The village of Bronxville has a long tradition of scouting. “The troops and packs of Bronxville have maintained the finest scouting organizations and have taught the boys of the Bronxville area to be leaders and outstanding members of the local, national and global communities.”
