Junior League of Bronxville’s 2016 Touch-A-Truck Event Touches Many Hearts

By Deirdre Doheny, Vice President, Communications, Junior League of Bronxville

Nov. 16, 2016:  In its seventh year of hosting Touch-A-Truck, the Junior League of Bronxville (JLB) set out to help the over 1,200 event attendees touch not only the vehicles on the field, but also the lives of those in need within the JLB's service area of Bronxville, Eastchester, Mount Vernon, Tuckahoe, and Yonkers.

As a result, the event that was held at the Immaculate Conception Church field in Tuckahoe on October 8, 2016, raised over $15,000, which will be used to support the JLB's vision of stamping out hunger in Southern Westchester.

For the second year, there was the "canned-good challenge," which for 2016 benefitted the food pantry of one of the JLB's community partners, Eastchester Community Action Partnership (ECAP) in Tuckahoe.  Thanks to the generous donations of attendees and the Eastchester Rotary Club, led by President David Walker, the JLB collected 636 canned goods. In addition to that, two of the JLB's top-tier Harvester of Hope sponsors, People's United Bank and PERSICO, donated $1/can collected (up to $500 each) to recognize the JLB's efforts and voluntarism in the community.

Mitzi Ambrose-Washington, JLB president, said, "The JLB is very appreciative of the support of all of our sponsors, including Pepe Auto Group, which contributed the mini-electric Mercedes for our raffle. We are also humbled by the generosity of so many of our active and sustaining JLB members and guests that chose to 'Be-A-Benefactor' and donated tickets to local families in need so the day could be enjoyed by all members of our community."

New this year, guests were thrilled to watch the Westchester County Police Aviation's helicopter take off midway through the event.

Also, children were in for two extra treats when they received a free pumpkin after walking through the haunted truck, courtesy of sponsor Nature's Cradle, and had a chance to pet a real horse in the over 50-foot horse trailer courtesy of sponsor Twin Lakes Farm.

Of course, there were plenty of construction vehicles and two inflatables thanks to PERSICO, local emergency vehicles from Eastchester and Bronxville, a school van from All County Bus, a moving van from Morris Moving & Storage, rides on the Roaming Railroad, free hair and makeup by sponsor Fabio's Hair Studio, complimentary Snoopy dolls from sponsor D.C. Ranieri Insurance Agency, and entertainment by Songs for Seeds of Scarsdale, the Greenburgh Nature Center, and balloon artist, courtesy of sponsor Main St. Pediatric Dentistry. Finally, seven local food trucks offering everything from wood-fired pizza to burrito bowls surrounded a new eating area.

"Touch-A-Truck would not be possible without our JLB volunteers that graciously give of their time," said Janice Duarte, JLB Touch-A-Truck event chair. "The JLB is also extremely grateful for the support of Joseph Nigro, manager at PERSICO, who touched our hearts by spending countless hours of his own time making the day an extra special one, including outfitting a dump truck with bubble machines. This event truly highlights the best of our community."
