Schatze and Peter Thorp to Be Honorees at 'May Magic' Benefit May 7

Feb. 15, 2017: Schatze and Peter Thorp, founding members of Gramatan Village, will be honored at Gramatan Village's eighth annual "May Magic" benefit on Sunday, May 7. There will be a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception with entertainment at the Siwanoy Country Club from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
The co-chairs of the benefit are Patty Warble and Wright Elliott.
Schatze and Peter, who have lived in the village for almost 50 years, have been chosen to receive the J. Rockhill Gray award for their outstanding contribution to the Bronxville community. The award was established in memory of Judge Gray, an Eastchester Town justice and founding member of Gramatan Village.
Schatze and Peter moved to Bronxville from Manhattan in 1967. Their three girls all attended and graduated from the Bronxville schools. Their three grandsons also attended Bronxville High School. Two have graduated, and one, Teddy, is a ninth-grader.
In their 50 years, Peter and Schatze have been involved in many aspects of life in the village. Currently, Peter is on the board of trustees of the Bronxville Public Library and the board of directors of the Bronx River Parkway Reservation Conservancy, and he is a member of the Rotary Club. Schatze is an elder in The Reformed Church of Bronxville and serves on the altar guild and the greeters committee. They are both on the board of directors of Gramatan Village, and they both regularly tutor young students in Yonkers with the JCY-Westchester Community Partners SMART program.
The Thorps became interested in the concept of Gramatan Village through the late Rocky Gray, whose son was involved with the then-new Beacon Hill Village in Boston. Schatze joined the newly formed Gramatan Village board as secretary and, soon after, Peter joined the board as well.
The Thorps have seen Gramatan Village grow as a vital resource in the community that is able to fulfill so many needs of its members. Gramatan Village is now their number-one priority as they serve on the board, volunteer, and support the mission in every way.
Gramatan Village is a membership organization that engages community residents who want to remain in the home and neighborhood they love. The organization supports aging-in-community with a network of volunteers, community partnerships, and peer connections that enable members to stay independent and fully engaged in the community. Gramatan Village is recognized as a leader in the National Village Movement.

Organized in 1982, the Bronxville Beautification Council (BBC) is a not-for-profit organization administered by a volunteer Board of Directors. Boulder Ledge Garden Club
Founded in 1966, the Boulder Ledge Garden Club is rooted in a mission to inspire a deeper appreciation and love for gardening and flower arranging. The club is dedicated to fostering and promoting interest and knowledge in gardening.
The Club maintains Bronxville’s Bicentennial Park and other civic gardens. In 2019–2020 the club raised $18,000 to replace trees in the village, reflecting its active role in community beautification. It also holds garden therapy projects and educational garden trips for members.

Bronxville Giving Garden
The Bronxville Giving Garden is a community-centered garden that donates organic produce to Eastchester Community Action Partnership in Tuckahoe and Community Service Associates in Mount Vernon. The garden is also a gathering place where school children and volunteers can discover the joy of tending plants and growing food.

Bronxville Green Committee
The Bronxville Green Committee is a volunteer organization that is part of the Village of Bronxville. It proposes and implements environmentally sustainable programs in our community.

Bronxville Boy Scouts
The village of Bronxville has a long tradition of scouting. “The troops and packs of Bronxville have maintained the finest scouting organizations and have taught the boys of the Bronxville area to be leaders and outstanding members of the local, national and global communities.”
