From the Mayor: Spotlight on Dr. Tony Matthews and Sequoia Medical 360

By Mary Marvin, Mayor of Bronxville

Feb. 10, 2026: As I believe the downtown is the heartbeat of economic stability and intergenerational interaction in our Village, I often spotlight our first-floor merchants, be a restauranteur or a purveyor of all sorts of other wonderful services but realized I have forgotten our second, third and fourth floor tenants who contribute to the energy, the vitality and the synergy of our Village and are also active members of the Chamber of Commerce.

To that end, I thought I’d explore an “upstairs” resident of our Village and given my passion for making Bronxville a Blue Zone, I came up upon the perfect person to have you meet up close and personal.

Dr. Tony Matthews and Sequoia Medical 360

Dr. Matthews

Meet Dr. Tony Matthews. Dr. Matthews’ credentials could fill this column. He has an MD, MPH and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Obesity Medicine and Clinical Lipidology and fellowship trained in Preventative Cardiology and Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism with a fellowship in progress in Longevity Medicine.

Originally planning on being an ER doctor, Dr. Matthews said his path to preventive medicine and the founding of Sequoia Medical 360 began with a phone call that changed his entire medical trajectory: his father had suffered a serious heart attack.

As a medical student, he realized that in our modern system, crisis is often the first symptom. He made the analogy with financial planning. We are very proactive as to our economic future. As example, when we start a retirement plan, we put a small amount in our 401(k), but every positive addition makes it grow and as the years progress, it only improves.

We don’t seem to be nearly as proactive in our healthcare life where the situation is exactly the same: if we put in positive healthy alternatives in the beginning, they reap great long-term benefits. I think so many people my age have negatively seen this in intense sun exposure in our younger days. Mistakes made decades ago are now unfortunately manifesting themselves. The comforting thought is it’s never too late to start too late to start our own medical 401(k).

As a result of his life experiences, Tony has become “an integrated doctor believing in the holistic approach.”

It is part of the continuum of having a primary care doctor, a concierge doctor and perhaps the yearly intensive medical evaluation that is done at places such as the Mayo Clinic to his approach of longitudinal care with the needed warm handoffs if necessary to a complex system to find patients the best care out there be a cardiologist, a hip surgeon or a dermatologist.

Given that premature death indicia are primarily in the areas of metabolic dysfunction, cardiovascular issues, cancer and cognitive decline, Dr. Matthews concentrates on these areas of prevention in particular with a long-term planning model changing as medicine changes and breakthroughs happen. In essence, if information changes, treatment changes.

Dr. Matthews’ patients are of every age, but reassuringly many are in the 65 to 90 range with his emphasis on minimal decline in mobility and functionality, but we are all up against an insurance system that is reactive not proactive. Dr. Tony explained in a desire for cost savings, insurance companies, especially in our younger years, don’t want to pay for preventive tests, rather just cure the issue at hand and let your next level of insurance care pay for the expensive tests with a lot of costs ending in the lap of Medicare, hence the unbelievable cost of this system in the United States.

As example, an early insurer will pay for broken bones but not pay for a bone density test to perhaps figure out why you have a frequency of bone damage. Sadly, it all makes sense from a financial perspective. As you can see an afternoon with Tony is a mind opening lesson on healthcare. He could be an integral part of Bronxville as a Blue Zone! - Specific geographic regions with the world’s highest concentration of centenarians who exhibit both longevity and low rates of chronic disease.  The five current Blue Zones worldwide are Okinawa, Sardinia, Nicoya, Ikaria and Loma Linda California.

Some of Dr. Tony’s advice right now is simple; just requiring attentiveness:

-Eat foods closer to the farm than the factory

-Drink 10 glasses of water a day

-Take time out for meditation and mind calming

-Connect with nature and connect with your neighbors and friends

Born in India, Tony raises his family in lower Westchester saying with two children, he has to, “balance his professional precision with organized chaos.”

When he’s not navigating metabolic strategy, he’s challenging his inner self on the chessboard, facilitating kindly separation of friends from their money at a friendly poker night or experimenting in the kitchen. He is the reigning champ of his fantasy football league, though these past years he did not take his own medical advice as he raised his stress level watching his beloved Jets which he claims is actually a unique exercise in resilience.

Tony’s office is at 116 Kraft Ave in the beautifully cared for building between Bronxville Diner and ERA Real Estate. Feel free to stop by as he has great literature and is truly an inspiration.

The Village is so fortunate to have such a variety of merchants, restauranteurs and professionals with every skill imaginable, and Tony is a great example of this diversity.

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
